There are some people out there selling American Singer canaries that are not really American Singer canaries. Since there are no standards for the AS., one can easily be talked into buying something that isn't what it is supposed to be. The other thing to watch out for is that real American Singers may be kept in a room with all sorts of other birds and may have picked up some parts to its song that you don't want the rest of your birds to pick up.

BUY FROM A REPUTABLE BREEDER. Don't buy from someone you don't know, or from someone that doesn't have a good reputation. If you're not too sure about American Singers, take some one who knows with you. I've listed some the things to look out for and though they were written for buying American Singer canaries, they are really just common sense rules when buying any bird:

1 . Visit the vendor's bird room or breeding room to see how clean and well kept his birds are. This 'II also be a tell-tale sign as to whether he is organized enough to keep good records.

2. Ask to see how he keeps his breeding records.

3. Is he an exhibitor at birds shows? Though not true, for all breeders, exhibitors will be more careful about how they breed. There are a few breeders who breed iust for volume for sale and will practice inbreeding to get the quantity to increase profits.

4. Ask where he gets his bands from. American Singer bands can only be purchased from the National Club. To do this, he must be a member. If he buys his bands from other than a National club, why?

5 . What clubs does the breeder belong to and how long has he been a breeder? Contacting someone from the club the breeder belongs to will let you know what his reputation as a breeder is like.

6. Ask for references.

7. Ask for a pedigree of the bird you wish to buy.

S. If the bird does not sing at the time of purchase, get a written guarantee which details by which date the bird is expected to sing and what the breeder is willing to do if the bird does not sing (ic. full refund, or trade for another bird, etc.)

9. NEVER buy a bird without a band unless you have followed numbers I to 8 above, or know the breeder well and can trust what you are being told.
